From Wadsworth Atheneum:
Caravaggio revolutionized contemporary painting through his depiction of real people in historical scenes, his dramatic use of light, and his psychological interpretation of narrative. These hallmarks can be already seen here in his first known religious composition. Caravaggio depicted Francis as he emerges from an ecstatic state, his body inert, his head thrown backward with one eye closed and the other half open. The unusual nighttime setting highlights this dramatic moment with its almost mystical lighting from an unknown source. Identifying himself with Christ’s suffering, Saint Francis received the stigmata -- the actual wounds of the crucifixion and thus was reborn spiritually.
