From National Gallery London:
Titian's style in the last years of his life developed into one of extraordinary freedom, a personal manner based on a lifetime experimenting with colour and the possibilities inherent in oil paints. This very late Virgin and Child was painted when Titian was also working on his poetic mythological narratives for Philip II of Spain, such as 'The Death of Actaeon' (also in the National Gallery).
