Although only one shepherd is shown in adoration, the subject of this painting is probably a variation on the Adoration of the Shepherds. An ox and ass are seen on the left and the Annunciation to the Shepherds is visible in the right background.
This early work shows the influence of Giovanni Bellini and probably also of Giorgione.
