Seurat produced many open-air studies in the early 1880s, often working along the banks of the Seine at Courbevoie and Asnières.
This small panel may be linked to his earliest sketches and ideas for the 'Bathers at Asnières'. The striking geometry of the composition, dominated by the axes of the vertical pole and the distant river bank, is typical of Seurat's studied and deliberate approach.
