From National Gallery, London:
These two paintings were made as pendants, or companion pieces, and would probably have hung next to each other.
Jacob Trip (about 1576-1661) made his vast fortune from mining, manufacturing iron and from trading with armaments. Margaretha de Geer (1583-1672) also came from a wealthy industrialist family. The couple married in 1603.
These portraits were commissioned in about 1661, when the sitters were both in their eighties. Between 1660 and 1662, two of the couple's sons, Louis and Hendrick, built the 'Trippenhuis', a grand classicising mansion on one of Amsterdam's canals.
It is possible that these portraits were meant to hang there.
