During the 1630s, Rembrandt was the most successful portrait painter in Amsterdam. The subject of this portrait exudes an air of wealth and success. In the unusually active pose, the fashionable gentleman seems to be rising suddenly from his chair in response to a visitor. The animation of the figure is complemented by strong, sensitive modeling and a compelling sense of space. Rembrandt’s remarkable handling of light and shade are evident in the sitter’s lace collar and cuffs, hands, and face.
