Monet returned several times to the subject of water, a motif which, with its refractions of light and its different reflections of the surroundings depending on the time of day or the season of the year, was to attract and challenge the Impressionists time and time again.
In his „Vernon church, Fog“ (1894, but wrongly dated 1893), it is the reflections on a foggy day that so intrigue the artist and „Snow in Amsterdam“ (1874) is an exemplary encapsulation of all the Impressionists’ key considerations and concerns.
