The painting shows the celebrated baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830-1914) at the Paris Opera in the title role of the opera Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas, which he played more than 100 times from 1868. Faure was also a famous art collector, who from 1873 was especially fond of the works of Manet; at one point he owned 68 of the painter’s works.
