In 1845, Delacroix exhibited this huge historical canvas, the most monumental of his works on the subject of Morocco, at the Salon. Almost fifteen years after the event, the scene evokes an audience which the painter attended on 22nd March 1832, during his travels in Morocco in the company of Charles de Mornay, sent there by Louis-Philippe on a diplomatic mission. But the mission failed and In this work executed later, the artist contents himself with showing the Sultan in all his finery. Several sketches and pages from Delacroix’s sketchbooks are related to this piece. What is remarkable here is that rather than a picturesque illustration of a colourful ceremony, Delacroix gives us a monumental portrait.
Purchased by the State, the painting is sent to the Musée des Augustins in 1845.
