This is one of a group of five landscapes probably painted at this period in which Cézanne experimented with a regular pattern of parallel diagonal and vertical brushstrokes to suggest shimmering sunlight playing across the various textures of the foliage. The site has been identified as the artist's native Provence, in the south of France
