The female form is a recurring theme throughout Pablo Picasso’s seven decades of creative production. His women are frequently portrayed holding musical instruments, usually guitars or mandolins. This serene and pensive woman sits in a blue chair, holding a mandolin and a sheet of music. The composition begins as a series of large, flat, colored planes, not unlike those of Cubist pasted paper collages. The planes are then animated with delicate incised and painted lines that define the instrument and the woman’s torso.
