From National Gallery of Ireland:
Morisot was the only woman to exhibit at the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874 and at most of the group’s subsequent shows. Although she did paint outdoor scenes, she is best known for her intimate domestic interiors. Here a young woman (posed by a professional model) is dressed for an evening at the theatre. The black gown to which the painting’s title refers is accessorised with a stole, choker, earrings and gloves. Morisot used broad brushstrokes for the woman’s costume and the background foliage, while her treatment of the face and hair is more delicately handled.
