From Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York:
At the suggestion of the artist Paul Signac, Matisse spent mid-July through mid-October 1904 in the remote fishing town of Saint-Tropez. Among the many local sites he painted that summer is the seventeenth-century Chapel of Saint Joseph with its panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and Mediterranean Sea.
