Cassatt mentioned to her first biographer, Achille Segard, that her acquaintance, Joseph-Gabriel Tourny took Edgar Degas to see this picture at the Salon of 1874. The latter commented on it, "C'est vrai. Voilà quelqu'un qui sent comme moi." ("It's true. Here is someone who feels as I do.")
